Older people's publication statement 9 August 2017

Date of publication:

Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 14 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Three reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, seven reports are 10-outcome inspections, three reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining report relates to a follow-up inspection.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in eight centres. These eight inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, six reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these six centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas including suitable staffing, safeguarding and safety, residents’ rights, dignity and consultation, and safe and suitable premises.
